First I needed to design an architecture that will match with our functional and technical needs and pre-requisites.
In our cases, we need architecture scalable; witch will use the best performance of my servers and hardware resources. We want to install all Microsoft BI applications; Sharepoint 2007 with excel services, Performance point, proclarity, IIS datapump, reporting services 2008, SQL and OLAP 2008.
At the time of the architectural development project, Proclarity wasn’t supported on 64 bits environment. For technical reasons the web application server had to be a 32 bits server.
Sharepoint should be installed on 64 bits environment, remember that Sharepoint 2007 will be the last version developed also for 32 bits environment.
We haven’t tested the Kerberos impact of using Windows server 2008 for the 2 web servers (I’ll publish an article about this aspect in the future), the 2 web servers systems will be Windows 2003 R2 servers.
For security and network reasons, we choose to prohibit a direct access to SSAS server and to use an http access only trough the data pump.
Find below a draft of the servers final architecture.
The Active Directory Domain name is yourdomain.net
Frontal Moss IIS server name is webmoss-srv01
(FQDN = webmoss-srv01.yourdomain.net)
Frontal web application server name is webapp-srv01
(FQDN = webapp-srv01.yourdomain.net)
SQL and SSAS server name is sqlssas-srv01
(FQDN = sqlssas-srv01.yourdomain.net)
